Microsoft reserved device names for files and directory

One of my friend Sanjay sent an email :

“windows users…. try creating a directory anywhere on your hardisk by name “con” and let me know if you can ……..somebody has challenged me and i could not…..looks like there is bug in the windows OS….”

My response:

Apart from ‘con’ as folder name you cannot have these following reserved charcters or names for file names or directory names.
Invalid characters at start {dot, space, tab} or
at end {dot, space, tab},
or at any place -{\\,/,:,*,?,\”,<,>,},
Reserved device names {aux,con,nul,prn},
Reserved port names {com[1-9],LPT[1-9]},
Reserved device name{CLOCK$}

Thanks to Kranthi who corrected that it is ‘NUL’ not ‘NULL’

  1. Anonymous says:

    Create a folder on the desktop and name it “Notepad”.

    Now open any webpage in IE and see its view source.
