What is Diwali ?
Diwali, Divali, or Deepawali is a major Indian and Nepalese Hindu celebration. The word “Diwali” is the corruption of the Sanskrit word “Deepavali” — Deepa meaning light and Avali, meaning a row. Diwali, being the festival of lights, thousands of lamps are lit in and outside every home on the day. Diwali is essentially a symbol of victory over darkness. In India, Diwali is now considered to be a national festival, and the aesthetic aspect of the festival is enjoyed by most Indians regardless of faith. The second day of Diwali is called Narak Chaturdasi. Diwali is the fourteenth lunar day (thithi) of the dark forthnight of the month of Kartik and the eve of Diwali. All over India, people celebrate Diwali with fire crackers, family get together, new clothes and pujas offered to Ganesha and Lakshmi. This festival is celebrated for five continuous days, with the third day being celebrated as the main Diwali or as ‘Festival of Lights’.
