Sankranthi

Sankranti is one of the national festivals in India. It got different names in different states in India. Sankranti in A.P & Karnataka, Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Makar Sankranti in Maharastra & Gujarat and Lohri in Punjab & Haryana.The festival lasts for four days with the 1st day Bhogi, the 2nd day Sankranti, the 3rd day Kanuma and the final fourth day makkanuma.

How states celebrate ?

Andhra

Those good old days during Sankranti time its month long kite flying celebrations in Hyderabad with kites of different shapes and colours. If kites are for boys then women used to decorate the door ways with rangoli. As a kid it is amazing to see differnt patterns of this rangoli and is unique to each house and its kind of competetion in the neighbourhood of which house has best rangoli.

Bhogipandlu is another event that is celebrated on bhogi day in the evening in many homes with children below 5 years and arrange toys and dolls. Parents and guests shower over these kids with cran berries(regi), Paes (senagalu) , flower petals and choclates.

Maharashtra

In Maharashtra on the Sankranti day people exchange multi-coloured til guds made from til (sesame seeds) and sugar and til-laddus made from til and jaggery.

Gujarat

In Gujarat, the pandits consider Sankranti an auspicious day to grant scholarships and certificates of merit to students who have successfully completed their studies in philosophy.
