In 2010 under the code name “Cyber Monday Crackdown”, The Department of Justice (DOJ) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have seized 82 websites domains that’s involved in online piracy and counterfeiting. In 2011 the domain seizure number has increased to 130 sites. The code name is “Operation In Our Sites”.
The timing is significant as many online shoppers flock to websites to shop for Cyber Monday. The targeted websites as reported seems to be ones who is counterfeiting the brand names and denying the profits for valid legal businesses.
Highlights of sites seized in 2011 Cyber Monday raid as posted by Torrent Freak
- Total 34 websites using “NFL” popularity and tricking users and charging money for services.
- Total 73 websites selling “Jerseys”. All sports merchandises sold unauthorized.
- Five websites with “louisvuitton” premium brand counterfiet websites.
- Five websites using “PUMA” and Two websites using “Reebok” were siezed.
